The Department of Physiotherapy Bayero University, Kano is the pioneer physiotherapy training department in the northern region of Nigeria. It is among the first five universities to start Physiotherapy training programme in Nigeria. The others are; University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, University of Lagos and University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The physiotheraphy programme of Bayero university kano , was initially at the then Federal School of Physiotherapy Dala, Kano which was established in 1989. However, due to the pressing need for degree holders in the Physiotherapy profession nationwide, the School became an affiliate of Bayero University, Kano in 1995 initially at the faculty of Science and later became a fully fledge department under the faculty of Medicine from the year 2000. The is currently housed under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in the recently created College of health Sciences in Bayero University Kano. The department has produced over 500 Physiotherapy graduates (both BSc Physiotherapy and B. Physiotherapy) spread across various fields of endevour. Due to the high demand for specialization in the physiotherapy profession, and the need for an avenue whereby physiotherapy graduates can acquire highly specialized training in academic, research and clinical expertise, the department is currently running 3 postgraduate programs that is already graduating students to take up lead research, academic and clinical roles. Finally, the department is in the process of starting a 6 year Doctor of Physiotherapy program to replace the 5 year Bachelor of Physiotherapy program.
